13° Pezcoller Seminar

Advanced course on surgical pathology: the histological diagnosis of rare tumors and of frequent but controversial neoplasm

12 - 13 June 2008
Auditorium del Centro per i Servizi Sanitari Azienda Provinciale per i Servizi Sanitari Palazzina D – Viale Verona – 38100 TRENTO

Presentation

The aim of this course is to provide lectures with a clinicpathologic view, followed by informal and interactive microscopic sessions at the multiheaded microscope. The first two lectures will focus on the present and future of Surgical Pathology. Rapidly evolving knowledge in basic science and in medicine, new technologies and new expectations from the clinicians and patients have prompted a revolution in surgical pathology. Where are we going, which innovations should we exploit in our laboratories in the next future? Dr. Claudio Doglioni and Dr. Carlos Manivel will describe us their vision.

The lectures on small round cell tumors of soft tissues, follicular lymphomas and pancreatic lesions will focus on practical diagnostic approaches, including the use of new diagnostic tools. Dr. Claudio Doglioni will also provide a stimulating lecture on the new immunohistochemical markers: immunohistochemistry provides a rapid mean to export knowledge from the experimental setting to the routine diagnostic setting in our laboratories.

During the interactive microscopic sessions, Dr. Claudio Doglioni and Dr. Carlos Manivel will bring a large set of teaching cases which they will illustrate to the participants. The cases will include not only unusual ones, but also those frequently encountered cases where much controversies and interobserver disagreement can be seen. Cases will be selected to include those where an optimal analysis of H&E slides is sufficient and those where additional techniques are needed to achieve the diagnosis (classical vs innovative pathology).

All participants are strongly encouraged to freely discuss the cases shown by Dr. Claudio Doglioni and Dr. Carlos Manivel, in an informal and constructive way. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own unusual/problematic cases, along with a brief clinical history, to be discussed at the multiheaded microscope.
