Dr. Fabio Mazza<\/strong> carried out the project \u2018Exploring the complex interactions between somatic and germline coding variants in cancer\u2019<\/em>, coordinated by Prof. Alessandro Romanel (CIBIO Department) and Prof. Gianluca Lattanzi (Department of Physics, UNITN).<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, it is the study of the interactions<\/strong> between inherited (germline) genetic mutations and those acquired by the tumour (somatic), in order to understand how they alter proteins and drive the progression of cancer.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

What does Fabio\u2019s project involve?<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n

Every person has a unique set of genes. We know that these hereditary traits can directly influence the way cancer develops and changes as it spreads through the body. <\/span>
This research project focuses on studying vast amounts of patients\u2019 genetic data<\/strong> to understand how a person\u2019s initial DNA might \u2018drive\u2019 or contribute to the development of more aggressive tumours.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to the Pezcoller-Casse Rurali Trentine PhD Fellowship<\/strong>, Dr. Fabio Mazza is studying the impact of mutations on protein stability<\/span>, using advanced bioinformatics analyses and computer simulations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The aim is:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Identify high-risk patients at an early stage, enabling early and accurate diagnosis.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Identify which patients will better respond to specific treatments, to avoid inefficient therapies and develop personalised treatments.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
